The earlier workflow
Common information, entered again.
Each variant carried its own record. Shared information had to be copied and kept consistent.
CATOOL · An AToM⁴ story
One publication. Multiple languages and editions.
A connected way for cataloguers to work.
The change in daily work
In the team's earlier workflow, separate MARC 21 records for publication variants meant copying common metadata across languages and editions.
The earlier workflow
Each variant carried its own record. Shared information had to be copied and kept consistent.
With CATOOL
Shared, language-specific and edition-specific information are maintained as related parts of one publication structure.
Work · Expression · Manifestation
Select a level to see what belongs there. AToM assembles the relevant metadata into publication outputs, reducing repeated entry across variants.
Illustrative publication model
A simplified tree. Publications also connect to authorities, subjects and other information.
A cataloguer's workspace
CATOOL brings publication records, WEM links, multilingual vocabularies and working views into the AToM⁴ interface.
Navigate the structure. Follow a Work to its language versions and editions.
Describe consistently. Bring controlled vocabulary and publication metadata together.
Build working views. Use search, filters and structured queries for the task at hand.
From cataloguing to publication
AToM brings together metadata from the appropriate WEM levels. The CATOOL workflow includes MARC outputs, RDF conversion and publication to Cellar.
Maintain the metadata at Work, Expression and Manifestation level.
Bring the relevant layers together for each publication variant.
Prepare the required metadata outputs for the publication pipeline.
CATOOL's MARC output uses metadata from connected WEM records. The publication pipeline transforms metadata for delivery to Cellar, the Publications Office of the European Union's repository for content and metadata.
The workflow changes how the team maintains source metadata; the required publication formats remain part of the output process.
About CellarIn daily use
CATOOL is in use for processing new EU publication content. Its practical focus is consistent metadata and a fast, connected environment for the cataloguing team.
